The designers' inspiration for The Depth of Space was to give new meaning to the spatial layout, reorganize the plane, and redefine the lighting axis. By using clear sight to measure the space ratio, the original multi-cut space was transformed into a cohesive and visually striking environment. Special paints with changing layers were applied to the ceiling dome, creating an oil painting-like visual depth of field. The natural sunlight from the north and west further enhances the layers of emotions, resulting in a free-flowing and dynamic atmosphere.
One of the key features of The Depth of Space is the reorganization of the spatial layout using a T-shaped design as the base for the traffic flow. This design approach, combined with the progressive light and shadow effects of the natural sunlight, solves the original roundabout and narrow compartmentalization issues. The private areas, such as the master bedroom and secondary bedroom, have been strategically placed to provide an expansive and free traffic flow. The ceiling design, with its open-ended concept, adds to the sense of spaciousness and freedom.
The realization of The Depth of Space involved the use of Italy-imported special paints, wooden-grained tiles, mirrors, hardware, unique stone slates, titanium-plated steel slates, and Chang Hong glasses. These materials were carefully selected to create a harmonious and visually captivating environment.
With a design area of approximately 40 ping, The Depth of Space includes both public and private areas. The public area consists of the living room, dining room, and resting area, while the private area comprises the master bedroom, secondary bedroom, bathing space, and study.
The Depth of Space can be described with tags such as "depth and tense of life," "transparent," "expanded visual space," and "light and shadow gradients." These keywords capture the essence of this design, highlighting its unique qualities and strengths.
The design team, consisting of Hung-Yu Chen and Yi-Chia Kao, successfully created an interactive and functional space in The Depth of Space. The T-shaped spatial design and the strategic use of natural light contribute to a seamless flow and a visually stimulating experience. The study, located at the depths of the structure, not only serves as a scenic view but also offers convenience and freedom through the use of sliding doors on both sides.
The Depth of Space was completed in 2020 in Taiwan. The design process involved extensive research, focusing on the use of the T-shaped design for traffic flow planning and the integration of light and shadow gradients. The ceiling area was opened up to alleviate visual pressure, and special paints were used to create a unique visual effect.
The design of The Depth of Space presented several challenges, including how to achieve a more penetrating visual effect in the space and how to adapt to the changing needs of the client's family members. By reimagining the layout and creating a freer and more open living space, these challenges were successfully overcome.
To achieve a transparent space depth, mirrors were strategically placed to decrease the beam-columns between the living room and dining room. The use of mirrors not only expanded the visual space but also created a scenic view that adds layers of emotions through hardware, lights, and shadows. Additionally, Italy-imported special stone plates were used to create a base for the scene, complementing the paint grains on the ceiling.
The Depth of Space, designed by Hung-Yu Chen and Yi-Chia Kao, is a testament to their creativity and ingenuity. This design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
